Shelley Posted December 14, 2016 at 02:19 PM Report Posted December 14, 2016 at 02:19 PM As the title says how do you somebody's family. I want to send a Christmas/new year card to my neighbour who is chinese, I only know his given name, not his wife's or child. So if we say his name is Tom is there any way to say Tom's family or Tom and family or something along these lines. I want to get it right, he has been helping me a little with chinese. I know 家室 , can I say 家室的 Tom. Thanks for any help. 1 Quote

Shelley Posted December 14, 2016 at 03:16 PM Author Report Posted December 14, 2016 at 03:16 PM Okay, simple but correct. I realise I made the error of using 的. Not needed with family. Quote

Shelley Posted December 15, 2016 at 10:55 AM Author Report Posted December 15, 2016 at 10:55 AM Thank you eslang, that is very useful. I don't know his last name and don't feel I can ask. I will just use 889's suggestion. Quote
Shelley Posted December 18, 2016 at 05:49 PM Author Report Posted December 18, 2016 at 05:49 PM Wonder why the down vote? sometimes it is a bit confusing when you get a down vote and no reason, have I made a horrendous mistake and offended someone, if so I will only be able not do it again if someone tells me. Or is it a terrible faux pas of etiquette to address someone's family like this. Who ever down voted please let me know. Quote
889 Posted December 18, 2016 at 07:05 PM Report Posted December 18, 2016 at 07:05 PM I wouldn't get too excited about it. It's easy to hit the wrong button by mistake, especially if you're using a smart phone with a small screen. (The buttons are on the right edge just where you scroll.) Quote
Shelley Posted December 18, 2016 at 10:22 PM Author Report Posted December 18, 2016 at 10:22 PM I didn't mean to come across as too excited, and I know it can be easy to hit the wrong button, usually then people say so and someone else will neutralise it. Just along as my card won't offend. Quote
