I came across a instant tutoring function

That's great, I always felt frustrated with italki when i wanted to have a class that day and it only allowed me to book for tomorrow.

I use italki fairly regularly. I personally never chose the professional teachers, as I have them face to face in real life. I normally use italki for chatting, or homework help, and as such a general person can help. All of my teachers have been nice.

An offshoot of this is community tutor prices are not as inexpensive as before.

An irritating thing with Italki is that when you browse teachers, it lists their "trial" price, which is always like 5usd. So you have to scroll through 3 screens to see what their actual rates are, and they vary wildly from $5. Some will actually be like $40 an hour(what could they actually do so much better thats worth 40 an hour?)

I also find that new teachers start with low rates and raise them, sometimes gradually, sometimes quickly.

Another thing that amazes me is that a quarter of the teachers don't speak any Chinese at all in their intro videos! I can't even imagine if I was an English teacher on there and did my whole intro video in Chinese. That seems so absurd to me, I want to hear their voice and accent before booking a lesson.

That surprised me as well.

Italki is a platform in the C2C business model, there are both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages.

1 Plenty of different types of teacher and course, from which you can choose.

2 Different prices and qualities, and you can decide based on your budget.

3 Everything is under your control, and you can change teachers if you would like to do so.

Disadvantages:

1 Most teachers work on their own and do not have their own systematic course.

2 You need to make your own judgement based on comments, number of completed classes.

My advice:

You can go to this kind of platform if you are pretty sure what you want to learn.

Similar platforms:

Cambly and Preply
