New Members Auskariux Posted December 30, 2016 at 05:54 PM New Members Report Posted December 30, 2016 at 05:54 PM Hey everyone I've got a chinese tattoo about a year ago, but I was never sure if it really meant what it supposed to mean, so I was wondering if you could help me out. I attached a photo of it. It supposed to mean "destiny". Is it correct or am I one symbol short from the correct meaning? Thanks in advance. Quote
Apollys Posted January 3, 2017 at 06:06 AM Report Posted January 3, 2017 at 06:06 AM I'm relatively new to learning chinese, my experience so far with the character is that it means movement or motion. I looked up destiny and I see 命运 (命運 traditional). 1 Quote
New Members Auskariux Posted January 3, 2017 at 09:31 AM Author New Members Report Posted January 3, 2017 at 09:31 AM Ah, I see. But one of the meanings, as seen in your picture, is "fortune, luck, fate", isn't it? Quote
Lu Posted January 3, 2017 at 09:34 AM Report Posted January 3, 2017 at 09:34 AM According to my dictionary: 1 motion, movement 2 carry, transport 3 use, wield 4 fortune, luck, fate. For 'fate', 命 would have been a better choice, in my opinion. Or for 'destiny', 缘. But all in all you're lucky: your tattoo means pretty much what you intended it to mean and the calligraphy is very nice. Next time you get a word or symbol from a language you don't understand, do your research before getting the tattoo, not after. You wouldn't be the first to get total gibberish. 1 Quote

Ofcourse, I will do a better job with my research next time I'll decide to get a new tattoo, thanks for your advice. Thank you guys very much for your help, I really appreciate it. Quote
