skylee Posted July 24, 2005 at 10:59 AM Report Posted July 24, 2005 at 10:59 AM This is a poem written over 1000 years ago by Li Yu, a very famous poet and the last monarch of the Southern Tang Dynasty. This type of poems is called "Ci", which means that originally it was written to be sung with a tune. The title of this tune is called "相見歡" (Xiang Jian Huan). The melody is lost now, but the lyrics remain. Translation 1 (source)Without a word and alone I went to the West Tower. The moon like a hook, Wutong Trees desolate, The deep courtyard locks in the clear autumn. Cut, but not severed, Trying to disentangle, but more raveled, It is the sorrow of parting, In my heart, a strange and unknown feeling. Translation 2 (source)I climb the western tower in silence, the moon like a sickle. Clear autumn is locked in the deep courtyard, where a wutong tree stands lonely. Sorrowful parting has cut, but not severed our ties; my mind is still wild. Separation is just like a taste in head and heart. And here is a painting on this poem by the famous cartoonist Feng Zikai -> Quote
