abdul Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:03 AM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:03 AM Guys it's mid of June. Has anyone received CSC scholarship? I have been waiting since two months and this waiting is killing me. Please share your good news when you get CSC scholarship.
ctan15 Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:08 AM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:08 AM @abdul I think so far we've got news on nominations and recommendations. Unfortunately, the very final results will really be in July. You can check out @VL02's posts which has been a lot of updates from different schools Regarding the 3000/3500 stipend, I think if you are really desperate (like me) and will rely solely on the scholarships, I think we can make do with whatever we receive in order to finish our study. Of course, if CSC will give more then it would be better! Anyone know what will happen if someone gets CSC scholarships from 2 different universities?
baihua Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:10 AM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:10 AM People talking about daily expenditure are totally overlooking big one off payments for the likes of medical, visa, police registration costs. Not to mention flights to and from your country.
Tiri Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:15 AM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:15 AM @baihua I had 3000 yuan with me when I arrived in China, it sufficed for everything: visa, medical, police regestration, dormitory deposit, books, SIM card, internet and living through September. karakorum Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:33 AM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:33 AM If you have the chance to be awarded a full ride scholarship running for several years, I don't think you should get to be too picky. Especially since 3500 is enough to live as a student without having to self fund anything other than the flights ins and out. I'm pretty sure the CSC didn't account for Clubbing and traveling in their calculations!
Angelina Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:51 AM Author Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:51 AM aaaaand unexpected expenses @baihua Like that one time when I introduced a Chinese friend to an another international student and the Chinese friend had an idea for something fun to do over the weekend, we then realized we had to pay for it, maybe 200 in total. The international student friend cancelled. The emberrasment... It was embarrassing, I did not want to let her know he is cancelling because of financial reasons. How to communicate that to a third person? More money! Obviously, there would be "white" and racism when you are talking about illegal employment. If it is all legal and legit there would be no racism or anything similar. It is now legal to have an internship. This will be written on your residence permit, including the time, e.g. June 15 2017 to October 15 2017. You need both the school and the company to help you with your paperwork. It has to be related to your studies and in most cases because of the nature of your studies.
Angelina Posted June 14, 2017 at 10:03 AM Author Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 10:03 AM @karakorum I have travelled to 卡瓦格博 though. Done both slow train Beijing-Kunming and Hangzhou-Kunming. One of them was 无座. Not fun. Also took a cheap Tibetan sleeper bus where everyone else was local, let's hope the bus won't slide with all the snow on the highway. Danidan Posted June 14, 2017 at 11:49 AM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 11:49 AM I have already gotten an award letter for the scholarship and a preadmission letter from my first choice school. I have to do a year or two of a language course before starting my major. Do I still need to contact my school of choice? My language study will not be at my school of choice. Guest Posted June 14, 2017 at 12:07 PM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 12:07 PM @Danidan are you an undergraduate student? If you are: Entrusted by MOE, the following 10 universities offer preparatory courses to undergraduate scholarship recipients. They are Tianjin University, Nanjing Normal University, Shandong University, Central China Normal University, Tongji University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Northeast Normal University, Beijing International Studies University, Capital Normal University, and the University of International Business and Economics. Source: http://www.campuschina.org/scholarshipdetailen.aspx?cid=97&id=2070 You need to choose the closest university to the institution that accepted you, the transportation tickets will be from your pocket and they will be reimbursed later on (according to what I have read so far) Now, you don't need to contact your institution now because you will have to take the preparatory courses and take the test which will grant you the definitive acceptance. Angelina Posted June 14, 2017 at 12:42 PM Author Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 12:42 PM They (probably the Chinese Embassy, depends on how you applied) will ask you to choose the university for the language course. You will be enrolled there during your language preparation. You will be enrolled at the degree-granting university only after you fulfill your language requirements. You won't have much contact with the degree-granting university during your language program. You are free to visit on your own and check the dorms if you need to do that, but you won't be a student there. You will be enrolled at the language program university. At BLCU, they had a separate class, meaning all your classmates will be part of this language prep program, separate from non-degree language students at BLCU. They were given the HSK, free of charge. You might also have to pass an oral exam, this depends on the university. You don't have to contact the university now because it is not there that you have to register in September. They probably have your application documents, you can ask to see if everything is fine with your conditional admission and to check if and when the interview with them will be, probably April or May. @Danidan

Jabri Posted June 14, 2017 at 01:18 PM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 01:18 PM @Tiri That sounds cool, I'm gonna save as much as I can so I could go somewhere on the weekend(friday-sunday). Have always been dreaming to explore the north and south China, also the northwest China region(Xinjiang). haha If the rumours about the stipend going to increase this year is true, that is too good to be true(singing Frankie Valli - can't get my eyes off you)
OlkaN98 Posted June 14, 2017 at 03:45 PM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 03:45 PM So I can choose whichever university I want among these 10 or it has to be the closest one to my university where I will be getting a degree? I applied to ECNU in Shanghai and I would like to go to Tianjin for my language program if that would be possible of course.
aymen Posted June 14, 2017 at 04:01 PM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 04:01 PM @Angelina Is it different when you're applying directly to your preferred university? I applied for a Chinese-taught Master's at Sichuan University and I'm pretty sure the language preparatory classes are held at Sichuan University. Regarding living with 3500 RMB a month, it is totally feasible if you live in dorms (which is covered by the CSC). It doesn't really matter whether you live in Shanghai or Beijing or any other city really, it should be able to get you through the month comfortably. Forget about it if you plan to live off-campus though. I was paying 2700 RMB for a room in central Beijing.
Guest Posted June 14, 2017 at 04:17 PM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 04:17 PM Keep in mind that the list of 10 institutions is intended for undergraduate students. Those who will pursue a masters and beyond hold their Chinese classes in their university

Guest Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:50 PM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 09:50 PM @MFlores I'm not completely sure about it but I'm making an educated guess considering that the web page doesn't mention anything about masters/doctoral students having to choose one of those universities. Guest Posted June 14, 2017 at 10:53 PM Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 at 10:53 PM Regarding the cost of going and living in China I would like to show what my scholarship announcement says: This is what I would do when I (hopefully) get the scholarship and go to China (let's say all those external costs have been covered already and the 1500 CNY has been used already): 1. After receiving the 2500 CNY, buy the self care items first and if it is possible buy them in bulk (in general, self care items are more expensive so buying them in bulk reduces their individual cost and would allow you to forget about that expense for up to 3 months depending of how much you can buy) 2. Set a daily budget with the remaining money. 3. Have 2 meals and a snack per day (this practice has worked for me as long as I get a lunch at the appropriate hour so it may not be suitable for everyone) 4. Plan your bus or train routes before going out so you can choose the shortest and cheapest ones. 5. If you see it convenient, get a bike. In that way you will reduce the costs of point 4. (You can get a bike as cheap as 300 CNY which is also cheap to maintain) 6. If you will pay water and / or electricity make sure to turn lights on only when necessary, take max 5 minute showers, and use university bathrooms more often than using dorm bathrooms. 7. Avoid living off campus/single dorm, especially if you are an undergraduate student with no other source of income besides the stipend and maybe some monthly support from your parents. (This also applies to graduate students who don't have enough savings or a passive source of income from your home country) 8. Avoid buying too many unnecessary stuff (most especially when the month hasn't ended yet. Look at point 10.), that fidget spinner may look great or that pair of earphones but you can live without them, can't you? 9. Start looking how your savings go up. 10. Feel free to use that money in anything you want or need. Like using it for going out with a comrade or for dating someone, getting that new Huawei phone, getting some souvenirs for your family, or just for keeping them in case of emergency. That's pretty much it, I know everything in this list is common sense and may appear exaggerated but it may help anyone in this group.
