@Jabri It is possible to survive on 1000 per month anywhere in China but as I said, it depends on how the individual spends and it is possible to use less than 1000, it all depends on people's disposition/taste etc. @Angelia is right that people make several claims which may not be general, so when you get opinions from people, you must check that it could be compatible with your particular circumstances

@VL02 Status is important but not absolutely. Once your status changes in any way, even if it reads "RETURNED", it is a good sign because it implies that you have succeeded at the departmental level and your documents were sent to the university arm that handles scholarship issues and they have begun the process of including you in the University's recommendation to CSC which is a high chance of getting it. It hardly ever says something like 'AWARDED'. This process is one of the rare areas of life where change in any direction is desirable.

@Yamiiiiii The CSC is awarded by the central government while regional governments also award, Shanghai govt scholarship is a regional govt scholarship. It could defer in coverage in some regions but for Shanghai, they get the same entitlements with CSC scholarship holders, though it didn't use to be so. The other difference is that CSC has more prestige attached, also, it is easier to get the regional govt scholarships because less people apply for such since they are less known.

I think I have mentioned this before, anyway, the person I know who has the Shanghai Government Scholarship for her doctoral studies now, applied while she was studying in China as a master's degree student on a different scholarship.

The Shanghai Government Scholarship is a good option if (and I mean if, depends) you are ineligible to apply for the CSC for a doctorate while you are a master's degree student in China and you don't want to have a gap year.

Update from Peking U, from my department.

"I was told that the CSC will not forward any scholarship applications to us from next month. In other words, if we do not receive it within this month, then it means your application has not been approved by the CSC. "

@Rytis95 @cliveface96 Hi! I would just like to clarify that the statement was from the perspective of my department. They said that the CSC committee of the school will reach out to them (department) to confirm if a nominated student actually passed through admissions. The staff from my department was just kind enough to inquire these things for me and that she would inform me if there are any updates.

@cliveface96 You will be notified by the agency you applied to. If you applied through embassy, they will be the once to reach out to you.
