Just like in English where 4 is a shorthand of “for”, 2 is used as “too” and “to”, in Chinese, numbers used for on-line chatting could fun.

I guess not every Chinese learner knows that we have 2 set of pronunciations for numbers. One could read 一, or 腰. Zero could read 零, or 洞. The unusual pronunciations are military jargons, I think.

I should warn you, don’t addict to this. It might ruin your Chinese learning. :D Here we go.

1 你

2 爱

3 山

4 死 <<<< bad luck

5 我

6 溜 <<<< luck number!

7 妻

8 发 <<<< luck number!

9 酒

51 我要

70 其实

80 不是

90 就是

108 你懂吧?

518 我要发 <<<< hot!

521 我爱你

58121 我爸也爱你

1525 你不爱我?!

536 我上楼

886 Bye-bye 喽!

114194 要你死,你就死!

Here is a joke. A driver registered the number 05144 for his car, because it sounded like “动我你试试”, meaning “Hit me? Try it!” Unfortunately, his car still got hit by another car. The driver was very upset until he saw the plate number of the other car. That was 44944, which sounded like “试试就试试”, meaning “Try it? I’ll try!”

I once had a phone number in China that contained combinations of 574 and 514. "Wo qi si" and "Wo yao si" It sounded like I was angry and I wanted to die when I gave out my phone number. ha! I also noticed that when you buy a cell phone number the ones with lots of 4s are always cheaper.

What?! devi, You’re really a veteran of chatting!

When I read the numbers, I feel I’m speaking Shanghaiese or some southern dialect. Interesting you use 0 for 你.

Couldn't have said it better!

Interesting you use 0 for 你.

I've found that both 1 and 0 can represent 你. Same goes for the other numbers---they can represent more than one character (as you can tell). Mostly the meaning is understood through context and guesswork. Has anyone else found this to be true?

I knew I was forgetting some!

555 呜呜呜

5376 我生气了 (varient of 537)

540086 我是你女朋友 (I think this one's funny. Would you say it to remind someone lest they forgot? To remind yourself?)

如果要從電視廣告中,票選一則運用諧音最成功的廣告,那麼達美樂的廣告一定可以名列前茅,幾乎青少年都會郎郎上口。「您餓餓,爸爸餓,我餓我餓 (0228825252)達美樂打了沒?」

In "Extreme Chinese" book there's an interesting example how foreigners pronounce 78 as JĪBA (forgetting to add aspiration to 七 (QĪ) and it sounds as JĪ to a Chinese ear), which makes Chinese people laugh.

78-78-78 鸡巴鸡巴鸡巴 :)

Sorry, I don't mean to swear but are any associations for Chinese people with 7-8?

this stuff makes no sense

if wo3=wu3 and bu4=ba1, then I'm going to state that Chinese is 50% context and 50% actual meaning.

According to thisShanghai Daily article, is now the most popular word on the Internet in China.

There does seem to be some really interesting usage on forums, in SMSs and instant messengers.

E.g. the use of numbers to abbreviate:

881 拜拜了

5454 不是不是

9494 就是就是

And acronyms:

MM 妹妹

Any other examples?~

We use 8484 for 不是不是 more often.

Though 5454 sounds like Shanghainese, my friend and I never use this in IM.

And 886 for 拜拜了.

For words used on forum, we have "灌水", "沙发" which is also very popular.

English seems to have this too...

Was chatting with a Taiwanese in the US, end of the chat I said '88'. He answered '99'. I thought he was joking so I answered '1010', but it turned out '99' means 'night-night'.
