Ian_Lee Posted July 27, 2005 at 07:02 PM Report Posted July 27, 2005 at 07:02 PM I have watched both the Japanese and US version of "Shall We Dance". And lately I found out there is also a Hong Kong version which is called "Dance of a Dream" (2001) that is starred by Andy Lau and Anita Mui. In that movie, Lau is the dancing instructor and peformed some great Tango. Anyway, among these three movies, I found that Richard Gere is the worst and really incapable to show what the film required from that character. Quote
Lollipop2000 Posted August 25, 2005 at 10:20 PM Report Posted August 25, 2005 at 10:20 PM I've only seen the American version of the film, and I thought it was terrible. I didn't see any point to it. It must have been Gere's bad acting.. lol. Is the storyline almost identical to the Japanese, or have there been many changes? Quote
Ian_Lee Posted August 26, 2005 at 01:21 AM Author Report Posted August 26, 2005 at 01:21 AM The story line of the American and Japanese versions are basically the same except the Japanese dancing instructor is more elegant. Moreover, there is no such implied sexual seducation as between Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere. Quote
Gary Soup Posted August 26, 2005 at 06:22 AM Report Posted August 26, 2005 at 06:22 AM Herb Caen, the late newspaper columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, once had this to say about Richard Gere: "It's no wonder he became a Buddhist. He knows the sound of one hand clapping." Quote
Lu Posted August 27, 2005 at 11:53 AM Report Posted August 27, 2005 at 11:53 AM I saw the American version and it is indeed bad. It might have been a good movie in the Japanese original, but in the American version it becomes only a Jennifer Lopez-vehikel, and she is utterly unconvincing. Edit: but I like the song from Anna and the King Quote
tluroc76 Posted September 1, 2005 at 04:36 PM Report Posted September 1, 2005 at 04:36 PM I haven't seen the US version but I did see the original Japanese version. I don't think it was great, not-bad though. J-Lo is a good dance without a doubt, acting....haven't seen any of her films, not going to, either. Quote
