New Members Swede Posted February 25, 2017 at 07:41 PM New Members Report Posted February 25, 2017 at 07:41 PM Hi guys, thanks for having me. My family bought an ‘antique’ (not sure of the age) Chinese cupboard which, along with other beautiful decorations, features to rows mandarin characters numbering 8 in total. As I am ignorant of the noble Chinese language, it would take a lot of time to figure out the meaning of these characters, so I hoped that some of you could please help me with a translation. Thank you for your time. I provide a link to a gallery of uploaded photos showing the inscriptions in question. https://postimg.org/gallery/11qvsfl36/2d30a74a/ Quote
Publius Posted February 26, 2017 at 10:23 AM Report Posted February 26, 2017 at 10:23 AM On the right is 白頭偕老 (諧 is incorrect spelling) literally "white head together old" -> to live to a ripe old age in conjugal bliss On the left is 夫婦齊昌 literally "husband wife together prosperous" -> shouldn't need more explanation I guess Quote
lips Posted February 26, 2017 at 11:18 AM Report Posted February 26, 2017 at 11:18 AM Shouldn't it be "夫婦齊眉“? Basically the same meaning as "白頭偕老”. Quote
Publius Posted February 26, 2017 at 11:39 AM Report Posted February 26, 2017 at 11:39 AM oops, you're right, lips 夫婦齊眉 齊眉 means (husband and wife) love and respect each other like this: Quote
