New Members gamefreak124 Posted March 1, 2017 at 02:31 PM New Members Report Posted March 1, 2017 at 02:31 PM Hello all, I was hoping someone here could help me as I haven't been able to figure this out on my own. I recently bought a phone off ebay. It arrived new in box with all the factory don't text and drive screen cover still on it. When I boot the phone it instantly goes to what I believe is a lock screen or something similar because whatever characters I type into the text box are hidden. I tried character by character translation via a chart and got past the 2nd character and then couldn't find the 3rd character 1000 down the list. I also tried downloading an OCR to pull the text from this image and auto translate it, but the characters the OCR pulls are clearly incorrect. My window to return this phone is starting to dwindle but I'd like to keep it if i can get it working. So, Can anyone tell me what this says? And possibly venture a guess as to what it wants me to type? The phone's keyboard is in english. P.S. This forum's photo upload is ridiculous. Quote
roddy Posted March 1, 2017 at 04:53 PM Report Posted March 1, 2017 at 04:53 PM It wants a password to start Android - maybe there's a default password for the phone, try 0000, 1234, etc. Quote
Lu Posted March 1, 2017 at 06:06 PM Report Posted March 1, 2017 at 06:06 PM Did you perhaps have any information that came with the phone, and that might have the password written somewhere? But could this be a scam of some sort, or someone selling you a stolen phone or something? I've had several Android phones and none of them had a password before I set one. It's very easy to put a screen protector thingy back on the phone, that doesn't say much about how new it is. Quote
889 Posted March 1, 2017 at 06:24 PM Report Posted March 1, 2017 at 06:24 PM A brand-new Android phone does not start up like that. You don't have a fresh phone. You should try a factory reset, which should give you a fresh phone, if there's no other problem in there. Exactly which buttons you need to push to get the reset menu when you reboot varies by phone, but Googling should give you instructions for your phone. If I had to guess, I'd guess this is a phone originally sent to another buyer, who set a password then returned the phone for some reason, with the seller then "mistakenly" sending it out to you. (Did you try just hitting Enter? Maybe the password is actually blank.) Quote
New Members gamefreak124 Posted March 1, 2017 at 06:29 PM Author New Members Report Posted March 1, 2017 at 06:29 PM Thanks for the responses. I had actually already tried 1234, Password, password, Android, android and a few random swear words... The only things in the box were a factory charger and 2 identical quick start pamphlets with stuff like how to use the camera. It seemed like the box had been opened but they phone is in pristine condition and the battery was so dead it didn't make any attempt at all to power on when I first hit the button. Not even a dead battery logo which most phones will display when they don't have enough power to boot. Ill contact the manufacturer one more time and see if they have any idea. The first time they told me to contact my provider, who told me to contact the manufacturer. Quote
889 Posted March 1, 2017 at 08:41 PM Report Posted March 1, 2017 at 08:41 PM A quick Google search finds others with this problem, including ASUS and Xiaomi owners. Since your message is in traditional characters, it looks more like ASUS. https://www.asus.com/zentalk/tw/thread-170051-1-1.html No answer there though, except contact ASUS. Quote
