Not able to attend first week of school

Hello,

I am awarded by the Chinese government to do a language programme in Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

School starts in the beginning of September, however I have to defend my thesis during that time.

Would it be problematic if I skipped a week (or even two weeks) classes?

You should speak with your school. At my school all scholarship students were required to come on the first even though classes didn't begin until the following week. I think it's because the schools need to get every scholarship student registered (tying their bank account with scholarship money, processing residency permit, arrange dorm rooms, etc.)
