Hello, I am Brandon Seaton. I wonder if you know or can tell that name is male or female. Name (Chinese Simplified): 布朗约翰. Translation: Brown John or Johan or Johann. In fact, Brown is the family name (surname). John is the name given. So well.. The pinyin is: Bulangyuehan. Do you think Yuehan is male or female? Yuehan Bulang. I am unsure about that. Well, it is unquestioning what name is a female or male. Of course, these name are from Hebrew in the bible. It is also pronounced closely to Yohan or Yohann in Hebrew.

The same way as in English - through practice.

There are certain characters that are used more in male names and certain characters that are used more in female names, and certain characters that are used in both.

Through practice and experience you'll tend to get a general feel for whether a name is masculine or feminine but there are some names that are neutral and could be used by either a male or a female.

The modern convention in transcribing foreign names is to keep the original order: John Brown => 約翰・布朗 (Yuehan Bulang).

And rest assured Chinese people know 約翰 is male because John is an English male given name. For a female it wouldn't be John in the first place. A female John in English would be Joan or Jane and correspondingly 瓊 or 簡 in Chinese (or 貞德 if she's a medieval French heroine).
