Can someone please tell me what this symbol means?

The first character is 淨, meaning 'clean, pure'. The traditional form is 淨, the simplified form is 净, so you have a hybrid here. A misspelling, basically. Of the second character I can only see the top half, if you want the meaning, please add a photo of the entire character. The calligraphy of both characters is rather ugly, unfortunately.

Next time you want a Chinese character tattoo: 1) please don't, just get something else. A nice picture or a symbol you actually understand. 2) if you really must get a Chinese character, go to a tattooist who knows Chinese and calligraphy, to avoid mistakes.

Ah, I should have thought of that. So not a misspelling, it's just not Chinese. Still, without context (and tattoos are usually without context) people will think it's a misspelling.
