“宋妈从桌底下拿出一只小锅,打开来还冒着热气,她盛了一碗黄黄的汤还有几块肉,递到我面前,要我喝下去。我别过脸去不要看,不要吃。碗里是西厢房的小油鸡吗?

Would someone please explain how I should understand "别过“ in this sentence. I understand that she won't even look at this bowl of soup. Does 别过脸去 mean "can't face it," as in "it's just too much for me to face?"

Thank you.

別過 is a two character verb meaning to turn your head backwards and look away.

Perfect! Thanks very much. Sometimes the dictionary just lets you down. Much obliged.

别过脸去 It's a Beijing local expression to make your face (or chin) turn approximately 90 degrees to avoid the stuff you dont wanna say or deal with ,

it simply means "turn away", but it doesn't necessarily only refer to turn away the face away. You can also say “请把你身子别过去,我要换衣服” meaning "please turn away your body, I am about to change clothes"
