devi9 Posted August 1, 2005 at 06:48 PM Report Posted August 1, 2005 at 06:48 PM Some Chinese Medicine sites: http://www.chinesemedicinesampler.com/ http://www.jcm.co.uk/ As far as mosquito bites are concerned, I have a good herbal/homeopathic goo (not Chinese) that works great at home. I'll post the name of it if you're interested. Quote

gato Posted August 1, 2005 at 08:07 PM Report Posted August 1, 2005 at 08:07 PM We used to rub Tiger Balm on mosquito bites. It works well to relieve the itch. http://www.tigerbalm.com/02_whatis.htm Quote
bhchao Posted August 1, 2005 at 08:13 PM Report Posted August 1, 2005 at 08:13 PM My sister and I used to rub Tiger Balm when we lived in Taiwan. Could not stand the smell. Quote
laohu489 Posted August 1, 2005 at 10:08 PM Report Posted August 1, 2005 at 10:08 PM Tiger Balm and I love the smell. 百花油 is good as well. Quote
devi9 Posted August 1, 2005 at 10:15 PM Report Posted August 1, 2005 at 10:15 PM The name of the homeopathic ointment is ledum palustre. It's used for insect bites and rheumatic pains. I get bites all the time and this stuff works great! It's got a very slight smell that you only notice if you stick your nose in the container of it (I only just noticed the smell after reading the Tiger Balm entries, after it's on your skin you can't smell hardly anything). liuzhou Posted August 2, 2005 at 12:17 PM Report Posted August 2, 2005 at 12:17 PM I swear by 花露水 (hua1lu4shui3). This is a Chinese equivalent of toilet water. The joy of the stuff is that it not only acts as an effective repellant, but should you be bitten, instant application soothes the bite and the symptoms disappear! Of course, there is a price to pay for this. It smells a bit. Some people like it, some don't. But I reckon that stinking like a Turkish harem (not that I have any experience of such things) is marginally better than scratching obscenely everywhere you go. And believe me I've had mossie bites on parts of the anatomy half the population don't possess! One word of warning. A bottle broke in my bag and ate the screen on my digital camera! That said, I have never known anyone to be allergic to it. Main ingredients seem to be witch hazel in alcohol. Available everywhere from supermarkets to corner shops. Quote
skylee Posted August 2, 2005 at 02:48 PM Report Posted August 2, 2005 at 02:48 PM Should 百花油 be 白花油 instead? Quote
etcetera24 Posted August 2, 2005 at 03:08 PM Report Posted August 2, 2005 at 03:08 PM Mozzies eat me alive so I swore by this stuff growing up in HK. It's an ointment called Mopiko. Don't have IME on this computer, so can't type the chinese, but the package looks like this: http://www.ttshpharmezy.nhg.com.sg/image/products/6317_1.jpg Not sure if its chinese (might be a Japanese product) but its great for bites - the menthol/ camphor relieves itching and it doesn't smell.
