Generally, it gives you a feeling that it's quite thin. @roddy What you saw is actually 夹层屋，apprently a type of aprtment with a mezzanine floor. I am not quite familiar with this structure. But tbh, I can't think of an example when anyone actually use this word, I may say 二层平台 -> the platform upstairs 夹层 has a more general meaning.
