Basil might not die (or might just die), but it won't produce leaves until warmer weather (at least 20) and a night time chill can easily kill it off. Chinese apartments do not benefit from heating or insulation like most European/Western ones (a source of constant complaints from my German classmates - be warned! :P) so night time temps can easily kill basil unless taken care of (warm closet or something).
