Can you help me read the name of these dry hot peppers? The sign is faded. Boss lady said something that sounded like "chou bai lajiiao" when I asked her.

Furthermore, that fits perfectly. They are grown down in the southeast of the province, Wenshan Prefecture. 文山州, an area noted for its hot peppers.

 

And when she said "chou bai" and I asked her to repeat it, what I got was just more Kunming dialect: "Qiu bei" is actually not that far off. She was overall rather difficult to understand. It varies a lot here. And going to the farmers market is always less likely to yield great Putonghua than going to a university campus.
