Xiaolong2727 Posted October 20, 2017 at 08:53 AM Report Share Posted October 20, 2017 at 08:53 AM Hi to everyone. I'm translating an essay by a famous journalist but I came across a sentence which results to me very difficult to understand. [...]但是,由于只搞经改,不搞政改,所造就的不是市场经济,而是“权力市场经济”,即权力主导和控制下的市场经济,被权力扭曲了的市场经济,权力本身也作为商品进入了市场 Could someone help me with this translation? Thank you
Luxi Posted October 20, 2017 at 11:28 AM Report Share Posted October 20, 2017 at 11:28 AM Looks like a well written article. 2 hours ago, Xiaolong2727 said: 造就 here, 造就 acts as a verb: 'bring about, contribute, achieve' - by extension: achievement/s. 所造就的不是市场经济 roughly: what is/was achieved is/was not market economy 2 hours ago, Xiaolong2727 said: 权力本身也作为商品进入了市场 In this context, 权力: authority. So, roughly: authority itself entered the Market. I like this phrase: 被权力扭曲了的市场经济 I'd be tempted to translate as 'a market economy kneaded by authority'. 陳德聰 Posted October 20, 2017 at 01:27 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2017 at 01:27 PM I think I might say moulded over kneaded, and don’t forget that it’s entering the market as a commodity.
roddy Posted October 20, 2017 at 01:34 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2017 at 01:34 PM Markets get distorted, rather than moulded or kneaded, no? 1
陳德聰 Posted October 20, 2017 at 02:23 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2017 at 02:23 PM I’d also go with “power” over “authority.” But if OP didn’t parse 所造就的 as 所+verb+的, I’m very curious to see what the translation attempt looks like. P.s. in my defence I’d just woken up at 6 in the morning.
