edelweis Posted October 21, 2017 at 04:46 PM Report Share Posted October 21, 2017 at 04:46 PM The book "Best Chinese Names" gives examples of sibling's names that form a word or phrase when put together. For instance: 刘阳春 刘白雪 (阳春白雪) 刘安家 刘立业 (安家立业) But oddly enough, in these two examples, the characters don't match: 李仁重 李道远 (任重道远) 赵锦秀 赵河山 (锦绣河山) Are these typos, or is it common for the characters to be altered when creating names for children this way? happy_hyaena Posted October 21, 2017 at 05:04 PM Report Share Posted October 21, 2017 at 05:04 PM According to my popup dictionary, the first one is a qyote from the Analects.
edelweis Posted October 21, 2017 at 06:27 PM Author Report Share Posted October 21, 2017 at 06:27 PM Yes, the words or phrases seem to be correctly written, but why do the names have different characters? Here is another one: 杨天平 杨之平 杨娇平 (天之骄) Would it be odd to have 骄 in a name, so people would replace it with 娇, or is it just a typo?

Not typos. Some characters are better for names than others, but despite the substitution, the allusion remains intact.
