When to use 了?

What is the difference between these sentences :

1. 刚才飞过去三架飞机。

2. 刚才飞过去了三架飞机。

I'm so confused about 了. Sometimes I see this together with 过 in a sentence and sometimes there is only one of them.

As far as I know it’s a kind of linguistic redundancy, like extra information. Both sentences mean the same thing.

Don't worry. They are the same meaning. and you're right. 过+了 means Subject has already done something.

I'm so confused. I saw a picture that didn't seem relevant, then I looked closer and saw the delicious food, then I looked even closer and saw the dodgy advertising...

過 can be directional (like in this example, flew “over”) or aspectual (as Michelle Su pointed out, that something has happened/been done). Try not to get them confused.

It can also be something like this, where the first 了 is aspectual and the second one is not.
