what is the difference between usage of 送 and 送给, can you give examples.

Posted

Big difference.

1. 我送你一个礼物吧。

2. 我送给你一个礼物吧。

See?

Seriously though, in my experience they can both be used equivalently like in the above example.  The difference emerges when 送 is used with one of its other meanings, like:

1. 我送你到门口。

2. 我送给你到门口。

Here it should be clear that the second sentence is no good.

(There will be some refined grammatical explanation, like 送给 can only be used when immediately followed by the subject - but I'll leave it to someone else to provide that.)

送 can be followed by a single object or double object while 送给 can be followed by double object only.  Or I should say, 送给 is a double object verb as "pass " in”pass me the salt" and can be used as such only.  "送“ is more flexible.

My understanding is 交給 is much closer to "pass" in meaning.

"Pass me the salt" was given as an example of a double object, rather than an example of an appropriate use of 送 or 送给.

I think:

① 送+sth.  (送礼物——圣诞节朋友之间喜欢互相送礼物。)

     送给+sth. × (送给礼物×)

②送+sb.+sth.(情人节要到了,我想送女朋友一束花。)

    送给+sb.+sth.(情人节要到了,我想送给女朋友一束花。)

③In the grammar “把”,you can only use “送给”:

    请把这束花送给Annie.

    请把这束花送Annie.×

Simple. 給 can only be followed by the recipient.

我送你一个礼物吧 ✔ Subject (agent) + give + indirect object (recipient) + direct object (patient)

我给你一个礼物吧 ✔ Ditto, same word order as in English

我送给你一个礼物吧 ✔ Same meaning as above. Can be analyzed as "I bestow upon thee..."

我送一个礼物给你吧 ✔ Same meaning, serial verb construction. Loosely corresponds to "I give a gift to you"

给一个礼物你吧 ✘ Might work in some varieties but not in standard Mandarin

送给一个礼物…… ✘ Ungrammatical

Bonus:

情人节等我给你送花来 ✔ Here 给 functions as a preposition
