What is in the bottled gas?

I have always thought that the bottles of gas sold to apartments without natural gas were propane, but recently told they were not.  What is inside them?

Dear Pengyou,

If it is cooking gas then it is usually LPG which is used as cooking gas all around the world where  there are no gas pipes leading to a house like in the US. LPG stands for Liquified Petroleum Gas which ironically is known as Propane or butane
