Hello there everybody :)!!

I have a question about the a sentence I have found in a story posted here http://chinesereadingpractice.com/2014/08/26/story-behind-the-idiom-zhuan-xin-zhi-zhi/

The sentence is as follows:

秋有两个学生,一起跟他学习下棋。

I am a bit confused by the sentence that starts with 一起. According to what I have studied so far the simple construction should be the following one:

Subject + 一起 + Verb
Ex. 他们一起学习下棋。

or

Subject + 跟 + subject + 一起 + Verb
他跟他的学生一起学习下棋。
他们俩跟秋老师一起学习下棋。

For this reason I do not recognise the construction used in the original sentence. Is it also correct to say "一起 + 跟 + 2nd Subject + Verb"?

Thanks in advance

P.S.
This is the reference I have found about the 跟…一起 construction.

I think the sentence is correct:

It's  the structure Subject + 一起 + Verb.

The complete sentence is:

秋有两个学生,(这两个学生)一起跟他(秋)学习下棋。

这两个学生-subject+一起+跟他学习下棋(Verb phrase)

跟sb.学习sth.=learn sth. from sb.

Thanks for your reply!

About this one

跟sb.学习sth.=learn sth. from sb.

Could you please show me where I can find it? Is that a passive structure then?

No, it's not passive.

The Modern Chinese Dictionary 《现代汉语词典》 has this entry:

④介词,引进动作的对象。a)同:有事要~群众商量。b)向:你这主意好,快~大家说说。

So in the first sense 跟 is interchangeable with 同 which means 'with'. https://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Expressing_"with"_with_"gen"

In the second sense 跟 is interchangeable with 向 which among other things can mean 'from'. https://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Expressing_"towards"_with_"xiang"#.E5.90.91_as_.22from.22

This 'learn from' sense is derived from the basic sense of 跟:

①(~)脚的后部或鞋袜的后部:脚后~|高~鞋。

②在后面紧接着向同一方向行动:他跑得快,我也~得上|我们永远~着党走。

跟 = heel -> at/on someone's heels -> to follow someone closely -> (to learn/borrow/etc) from someone

Your sentence is not 跟……一起. It's (A&B一起)跟C学习D.
