Opera make up and costumes

I have been trying to learn more about Opera make-up schemas as well as costumes. I want to better understand exactly what make-up characterizations signify. I know a white base means trecherous, but why? What do the other colors signify? Why the peacock feathers on the head? Etc...

Does anyone know of a website or book, preferably in english that can help me? What do you know? I'm curious to learn more.

As far as i know, red base means loyalty and black means justness, don't know why, maybe it's a convention or something...take a look at these sites, it may be useful:

Black is from Bao Gong 包公 More

Red is from Guan Gong 關公 More
