randall_flagg Posted August 11, 2005 at 08:59 AM Report Posted August 11, 2005 at 08:59 AM Hi again! I am about to go to China (4 days and counting) and I will be roaming those bookstores. Can anybody recommend a good 成语词典 that is suitable for foreigners? And: I will be taking Classical Chinese 101 next semester back home, and I was wondering if you could recommend a book suitable for foreign learners who want to learn Classic Chinese? That would be awesome! Thanks, Randall Quote
chenpv Posted August 11, 2005 at 03:08 PM Report Posted August 11, 2005 at 03:08 PM hi, i think there are two choices for the Chengyu dictionary: A. 《现代成语小词典》publisher:商务印书馆 RMB 10.00 or so. it is a concise dictionary and you can put it in your pocket. B.《中国成语大辞典》 publisher: 上海辞书出版社 RMB 99.00 This is the most famous dictionary in china. it includes about 10,000 Chengyu, within term, it lists its pronunciation, definition, origin and examples from all kinds of works. i find it quite useful but i dont know whether its suitable to you. since the classical chinese: The bible: 《古代汉语》(上、中、下)writer:王力 sorry i forgot the publisher and the price, and the books are back home and i cannot look them up for you. Another bible used for hundreds of years 《古文观止》mine was published by 岳麓出版社 RMB 23.00 Quote

skylee Posted August 18, 2005 at 01:50 PM Report Posted August 18, 2005 at 01:50 PM Perhaps you could consider this one -> 異口同聲 vs Be of one voice If you can read traditional characters and use a Chinese-Chinese dictionary, then you can use this free on-line Dictionary of Chinese Idioms. Quote
