laurenth Posted March 1, 2018 at 07:42 PM Report Posted March 1, 2018 at 07:42 PM I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned it, but this week's edition of The Economist (Feb. 24th 2018, page 68) has a short article about a new "spirited" translation (so they say) of part 1 of Jin Yong's Legends of the Condor Heroes. I thought it might interest wuxia buffs and Jin Yong's fans. 2 Quote
somethingfunny Posted March 2, 2018 at 10:18 AM Report Posted March 2, 2018 at 10:18 AM Link The Economist is subscription, but you get a few articles free, so you should be able to read it (unless you've spent your allowance reading about Brexit). Quote
Luxi Posted March 2, 2018 at 12:00 PM Report Posted March 2, 2018 at 12:00 PM If The Economist won't let you in, The Straits Times will: Jin Yong's Chinese martial arts novel published in English for first time ...and The Telegraph https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/world/china-watch/culture/legends-of-condor-heroes/ and Amazon (you can read the first few pages in your local Amazon) Quote

Luxi Posted March 24, 2018 at 01:47 PM Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 01:47 PM Another article on the English translation of Jin Hong's "Legend of the Condor Heroes" volume 1: "A Hero Born". This is by the novelist Marcel Theroux, writing for The Guardian. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/mar/16/hero-born-kung-fu-chivalry-wuxia-jin-yong-legends-condor-heroes-translation I couldn't agree more with his concluding personal impression : Quote As I read Anna Holmwood’s vibrant translation – gripped by the unashamed narrative zest and primary-coloured fairytale world – I felt a slight regret that I was coming to this novel in my fifth decade. It would be a wonderful initiation into a lifelong enthusiasm for China, its history and civilisation, its vast and chronically misunderstood presence in the world. 1 Quote
