Popular Post Shelley Posted March 6, 2018 at 10:33 PM Popular Post Report Posted March 6, 2018 at 10:33 PM Hello and welcome to the forum. I think your carving is"At peace" ,or "Safe and Sound" as in arrive without mishap. The characters you have there are not quite the same as the modern version I can type. They do change over the years for many reasons. 平安 It is pronounced píng 'ān It looks like it might have been an amulet to bring the wearer safe and peaceful journeys. 4 2 Quote

Shelley Posted March 8, 2018 at 03:55 PM Report Posted March 8, 2018 at 03:55 PM The closest I could find was this, it is a chinese gourd. If you search using the photo tool you get loads that are similar, you may want to spend some time trawling through them to find the closest match. This was my search result https://www.google.co.uk/search?sa=G&hl=en-GB&q=jade&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&tbs=simg:CAES0wEJCaN27kzyND8axwELEKjU2AQaBAgVCAQMCxCwjKcIGmAKXggDEiYh6AvZFgHaA-oL9ArEAeILxQHDIO03-zPrPaA3pjaOJJw27D2lNhowqIUoqOeTwEPpextnWzbHnqnDOmEDciOTEkbzW4TV2m2Bp-QmY6dNYAT0iyNGFWu9IAQMCxCOrv4IGgoKCAgBEgRzOzdPDAsQne3BCRo1ChcKBGphZGXapYj2AwsKCS9tLzAxYjVkeQoaCgdwZW5kYW502qWI9gMLCgkvbS8wMWtyanIM&fir=cwwVUKo_CjLHUM%3A%2Cfcpbgwaw37b-TM%2C_&usg=__sb1sYbuV-hB7To-7ZD3cqQZXJKs%3D&ved=0ahUKEwjwssi6iN3ZAhURPsAKHRl0CJ4Q9QEIRDAI#imgrc=_ 1 Quote

Tomsima Posted March 8, 2018 at 07:28 PM Report Posted March 8, 2018 at 07:28 PM Whilst it may indeed be a gourd, upon first glance at your photo above I assumed it was a 福豆, a 'fortune' peapod. This is also a very common symbol in Jade jewellery, and can be seen most commonly as three peas in a row, but can also appear as peas in or beside their pod as I assume yours is depicting. The symbolism of three peas is bound to vary from source to source: one source says 如四个豆子的福豆,寓意为四季平安; (Four peas represents four seasons of peace) 当雕琢为三个豆子时,则蕴含着福、禄、寿齐到,连中三元的美好之意; (Three peas represents happiness, wealth and longevity) 而两颗豆子的福豆则代表着母子平安的寓意。 (Two peas represents the love between mother and child) 无论是哪一种类型的福豆,均要求饱满圆润,它不仅象征着人们生过幸福美满,而且果实累累,也隐喻着新的希望。 (No matter how many peas there are, all represent the meanings of 'fullness', 'bountiful', bringing the 'hope of fresh, new life') 1 1 Quote
Shelley Posted March 8, 2018 at 10:43 PM Report Posted March 8, 2018 at 10:43 PM I think @Tomsima has probably got it right, as soon as pea pod was mentioned it was clear to me that, that is what it is. Quote
