LaoDing Posted March 24, 2018 at 07:48 AM Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 07:48 AM Hi. I want to type pinyin (with tone marks) as annotations to Chinese characters (like in Baidu Fanyi or Google Translate). I'm using either Word (Mac) or Libre- either is fine. I've searched but could not find... I've added an attachment to show what I mean. The pinyin could be above or below. Thanks! Quote
Shelley Posted March 24, 2018 at 11:40 AM Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 11:40 AM I would recommend Pinyinput. This allows you to type pinyin with tone marks. Have a look here https://www.pinyinput.net/ It was written by @imron so support is excellent, it works very well and its free. Quote
imron Posted March 24, 2018 at 12:10 PM Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 12:10 PM 30 minutes ago, Shelley said: and its free. (Not on Mac, sorry) Quote
Shelley Posted March 24, 2018 at 12:16 PM Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 12:16 PM Sorry missed the fact it was on Mac, still worth it though, just checked it is only 5 Australian dollars. Quote
LaoDing Posted March 24, 2018 at 04:27 PM Author Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 04:27 PM I just bought it. Thanks a lot for the help Shelley and for building it Imron. My daughter the Chinese whiz (it takes her a month to learn what it takes me a year) will be using it a lot in her presentations. 2 Quote
imron Posted March 24, 2018 at 04:48 PM Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 04:48 PM Thanks. Hope you find it useful. Let me know if you have any problems or suggestions. Quote
DavyJonesLocker Posted March 24, 2018 at 06:18 PM Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 06:18 PM You can just use a VBA script to do it. Highlight and press a short cut key . Takes some technical know how though. Loads of pinyin scripts on the web Quote
imron Posted March 24, 2018 at 08:52 PM Report Posted March 24, 2018 at 08:52 PM You can, but it only works on a limited set of applications. Pinyinput is a system-level input method and therefore works anywhere you can type text, and requires 0 technical know how. Quote
LaoDing Posted April 1, 2018 at 01:08 PM Author Report Posted April 1, 2018 at 01:08 PM Pinyinput is extremely simple to install and works great. The only trouble I add was seeing that I need to select it as an input source in the keyboard dropdown menu (I'm up to six now!). That's for the Mac. Quote
imron Posted April 1, 2018 at 01:53 PM Report Posted April 1, 2018 at 01:53 PM Do you have any suggestions for what you'd imagine to be the ideal solution to this problem? Quote
imron Posted April 1, 2018 at 02:37 PM Report Posted April 1, 2018 at 02:37 PM See also this and this. I've not used either, but they came up in a search for keyboard shortcuts to switch input source on macOS. Quote
