Hi

I'm wondering is someone would be kind enough to tell me what the characters on this throwing star translate too? Curious about getting a tattoo of this. Thank you to anyone willing to spend the time to do this for me!

A throwing star. How... Daoist??

Yeah, don't get a tattoo of this unless you are actually a Daoist. And once you are, you probably won't get it as a tattoo either. Daoism is a philosophy/religion with about 2000 years of history and a metric ton of ideas that are even more complicated than they are interesting (and they are plenty interesting). Daoism is not something you should get as a pretty picture. And from what I know about Daoism and throwing stars, a throwing star with that design is also idiotic.

I think that goes for all Chinese, Asian script or cultural style tattoos. I'd say 99% of people just see a pretty picture. Is it that bad though? Only people who know about daoism will know about that tattoo.  If the OP is in a western country I don't think anyone will bat an eyelid. Each to their own.

I think it's one thing to get a tattoo of 女神 or 旅行 or some chengyu or the other, and quite another to co-opt some of the core imagery of a large and old religion without any idea what you are doing. I will gently tell people who want 女神 or 旅行 etc to consider getting it in a nice ABC font, in their own language, but yeah, to each their own, and good for them they checked here. But not an array of Daoist symbols. Just, no.

It's a bit like crucifix. A lot of people from a traditionally  Catholic country like I am  are not really impressed with people using a crucifix as a fashion item.

Jesus didn't die to hang off some slutty girls over exposed cleavage in a nightclub
