I must just add something I forgot about: when I get a train at the local station, going to central London, I work out how far along the platform to stand, and it depends how long the train is. There is a message and an announcement "This train is formed of four (or eight, or  twelve) carriages"! I totally forgot that but I see it every time and we were discussing it. And yes, some railway lines say 'this train is formed of eight coaches", apparently.

Zeppa, thanks for that clarification.

 

I remember in Japan they would sometimes announce how many "cars" the next train would have, so we would make sure to wait for the next train on the right part of the platform.
