Angos Posted June 13, 2018 at 01:30 PM Report Posted June 13, 2018 at 01:30 PM Hi guys. I was creating a character based on the Eight Immortals (八仙) and want to name him The Ninth Immortal. I went to Google and the give me this 第九個不朽. Since it looks nothing like the original, I searched on internet and end up with something like this 第九仙人. Is this correct? Is ther some way to write "The Ninth Immortal" in a mor elegant form? Thanks. Quote
Jim Posted June 13, 2018 at 02:29 PM Report Posted June 13, 2018 at 02:29 PM The character for immortal contains an element meaning "person" on the right and another with the meaning "mountain" on the left [edit: got my left and right wrong way round here!], perhaps there to suggest eternal endurance. There's a Chinese set phrase 山外有山 "beyond the mountains, more mountains" (roughly, you/this might seem great but there's always someone/something more/better) so maybe a visually punning 仙外有仙, the immortal beyond the immortals. 1 Quote
