Buch Posted June 21, 2018 at 07:15 PM Report Posted June 21, 2018 at 07:15 PM Can anybody help me translate this symbol? It's an art print by Chinese artist Wing Gig Fong from 1958. Quote
Jim Posted June 21, 2018 at 08:47 PM Report Posted June 21, 2018 at 08:47 PM I looked up the piece and see it has a title taken from the Laozi: https://americanart.si.edu/artwork/he-who-obtains-has-little-he-who-scatters-has-much-lao-tzu-6th-century-bc-chinese-moralist Makes me think it's 少 http://www.zdic.net/z/18/js/5C11.htm, possibly repeated (ETA though really not convinced about that), as the Chinese for the quote is 少则得多则惑. Not at all sure though. Quote

Buch Posted June 22, 2018 at 06:39 AM Author Report Posted June 22, 2018 at 06:39 AM Thank you Jim - interesting! I received another ID some years ago for the sign: 源 I don't know if that makes sense to you guys here? Quote
Tomsima Posted June 22, 2018 at 08:10 AM Report Posted June 22, 2018 at 08:10 AM I think this is 慷 (see attached image) It has to either be a 忄or a 片 on the side. This is almost certainly not 少 unless there is some variant I haven't come across. It /might/ be the artists own way of writing a 愿 with the 心 as a 忄, but unlikely. It's definitely not a 惊 as this is 驚 and its 草書 forms almost always stem from the latter 2 1 Quote

Buch Posted June 22, 2018 at 12:34 PM Author Report Posted June 22, 2018 at 12:34 PM Thank you for your contributions ? No chance that it's: 源? Quote
imron Posted June 22, 2018 at 01:03 PM Report Posted June 22, 2018 at 01:03 PM Look at the title of the piece in English (Generosity). Then look up the meaning of the word 慷. It's unlikely to be 源. Quote
