What is the most common way to say "yellow" in chinese?

Yes, certainly hear it used all the time in ordinary speech to describe yellow clothing or other everyday items. There are a few other characters such as http://www.zdic.net/z/21/js/7F03.htm but much rarer in my experience, and also some descriptive terms like lemon 柠檬色 but again not used as generally (and often said as lemon yellow in any case).

To describe the color as on a shopping website etc you always  see 黄色

Unless sometimes it's things like paint color charts where they use weird and wonderful names, but in English I don't know what these color names refer to either .?

Edit, "yellow" has a negative meaning (i.e. Seedy)  also but it's pretty clear from context.

Yes, but not always.

 黄帝,炎黄子孙,黄姓。。。。

Indeed, I didn't want to suggest it's the only use.

Edit : or in the case of the ongoing world cup, referees are handing out 黄牌
