New Members Oliver Lin Posted July 3, 2018 at 06:20 PM New Members Report Share Posted July 3, 2018 at 06:20 PM Hi, I am a beginner taking Mandarin online courses (from Chinesepod). So, I stumbled upon this word 麥造 in Jay Chou's latest song 不愛我就拉倒. It is the last line of the chorus, which goes like this"好膽你就麥造". The lyric translation is if you have guts, then don't leave. But when I looked up 麥造 in the dictionary, it translated as "wheat". Also, the way Jay Chou is pronouncing 好膽 in the song seems a bit weird to me haha. I would be so grateful if anyone can be kind enough to clear my confusion by explaining this in English. Thank you very much.
Lu Posted July 3, 2018 at 07:15 PM Report Share Posted July 3, 2018 at 07:15 PM Welcome to the forums! Are you self-studying? 麦造 in this case is Taiwanese written in Chinese characters that sound the same. Mai zao (I forgot the correct transcription) is Taiwanese for 'don't go'. So it's correct that you didn't understand it.
Publius Posted July 4, 2018 at 04:11 AM Report Share Posted July 4, 2018 at 04:11 AM You're not the only one who don't understand it. Chinese people are asking the same question: http://www.fanjian.net/jbk/hdnjmz.html

andysun731 Posted July 4, 2018 at 08:45 AM Report Share Posted July 4, 2018 at 08:45 AM 麥造 is not Mandarin but Taiwan dialect. Jay Chou sometimes likes to mix dialect with Mandarin.
