Kewen Posted July 3, 2018 at 09:04 PM Report Share Posted July 3, 2018 at 09:04 PM Hello, I'm trying to come up with a good Chinese name for my girlfriend before our move to China, where she'll be working as an English teacher. She said she wanted some cat-related meaning in her name, so my first (semi-serious) shot was 赫妙猫. Two questions: 1. Is it weird to have the 猫 character in your name? I was looking for other cat-related characters but they are mostly masculine by default, with their female counterparts requiring 2 characters. 猫 at least has the 艹 radical in it which should make it clearly feminine, but I'm not sure what other connotations the character (or cats in general) might have that would make it suitable or unsuitable for a name. 2. Can any of you think of any good author/writing (prose, not poetry!) related characters that would work well in a girl's name? Many thanks! andysun731 Posted July 4, 2018 at 08:57 AM Report Share Posted July 4, 2018 at 08:57 AM Don't use 猫 directly in the name, which is really weird. Usually cat-related names are used as online nick names, not as a real Chinese name.

Shelley Posted July 5, 2018 at 03:01 PM Report Share Posted July 5, 2018 at 03:01 PM Thanks for the link, I lost mine, I read this poem for the first time a few weeks ago and it brought a tear to my eye. As a cat owner and struggling with rats in the garden, it felt very familiar. I have buried many cats in my garden, some of them were great rat catchers. New Members mikumeao Posted July 8, 2018 at 08:08 AM New Members Report Share Posted July 8, 2018 at 08:08 AM The character 猫 or 喵 are not common words for Chinese name. But 咪 is better for a female's name. 咪 is the nickname for cat (猫) and sounds cute, usually people call their cat not 猫 but 咪咪 (yes, 2 time repeating, to feel lovely and cute).
