Fox Arashi Posted June 28, 2018 at 04:49 PM Report Share Posted June 28, 2018 at 04:49 PM i wanted my chinese first name to be 岚狐 (Lánhú). is this a good name to have? does it sound like a real name? give opinions
heifeng Posted June 28, 2018 at 07:49 PM Report Share Posted June 28, 2018 at 07:49 PM Honestly, the first thing that comes to my mind when I see 狐 is someone yelling 狐狸精!......so I would err on the side of not using this character in a name.....but by all means apply the power of google search to see if it has ever been used as a serious name:)
arrow Posted June 30, 2018 at 09:06 AM Report Share Posted June 30, 2018 at 09:06 AM The character is a good one, at least not a common choice. 狐 is considered as a cunning animal in China. The sound of this name, on the other hand, is pretty good. You can try replace 狐 with 鹄 or something else.
Fox Arashi Posted July 1, 2018 at 11:08 AM Author Report Share Posted July 1, 2018 at 11:08 AM is 暴恳霖 a good name to have? i know what the characters mean i just need to know if its a normal-ish name and make sense and all that. please give opinions
New Members wendy123 Posted July 3, 2018 at 04:09 AM New Members Report Share Posted July 3, 2018 at 04:09 AM No, it's not. first of all. as far as I know, there is no such a surname in China. since you know what 暴 means, you should know it's not a good word. Second. I barely see people have 恳 in their names. the meaning of that character is good. it means honest and hardworking. but it's just not proper for names. Last, all of the three words seem to have too many 笔画, which makes people uncomfortable to read. We usually avoid that. I mean. you can have one character of your name like that, no more than one, better none. Btw, the last character 霖 is not bad for a name. some people use it, for both boys and girls.
mungouk Posted July 3, 2018 at 08:18 AM Report Share Posted July 3, 2018 at 08:18 AM MDBG reckons 暴 is a surname.
Fox Arashi Posted July 3, 2018 at 10:50 AM Author Report Share Posted July 3, 2018 at 10:50 AM 暴 is a surname, i dont think it's used very often or something or its too old. i will keep 霖 then and not 恳 and try to keep the 笔画 count to a minumum. what about 岚 as surname? or 狐? also what two character first names use 'lin' in them (that are male)? New Members wendy123 Posted July 4, 2018 at 09:14 AM New Members Report Share Posted July 4, 2018 at 09:14 AM Ok, I looked it up in the dictionary 暴 is a surname. but I've never heard of it in my life, neither in books nor on TV. 岚 is not a surname for sure. but many people use it in given names(more likely for girls) Actually, if you want your name to be more like a Chinese one. you'd better choose a surname from the most commonly seen, like 张,王,李,刘 etc. (张 is my favorite btw). To many Chinese people, a non-Chinese person having a full Chinese name is already a little strange. it would be stranger if you choose a rarely used surname. In my opinion, 张雨, 张小宇 are good names(for both boys and girls. I would use that if I were able to name myself haha), they are simple but also sound cute and cool. not so many people use them though. some parents are trying so hard to make their children's names meaningful and unique and end up sounding silly. Oh, do not use 狐, never heard of it. I guess only people from thousands of years ago use that. There are too many combinations for "Lin", I can give some examples: 天霖,霖轩,一霖, 伯霖. they all sound good.

dwq Posted July 4, 2018 at 12:48 PM Report Share Posted July 4, 2018 at 12:48 PM You can usually look up 「X姓」to see if X is a surname. In the case of 狐,it turns out to be a historical 氏 and I can't seem to find any example of modern person with that surname. 令狐 is a surname in 百家姓 (as is 暴, incidencially) and perhaps there are still some people with that surname. 風 is also a surname (one of the oldest, actually) but I can't seem to find modern example of it either, outside of fiction. https://zh.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/狐偃 https://zh.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/风姓

Taiwanese diplomat Bruce Linghu is one. But it's very, very rare and I would not recommend it for a foreigner's Chinese name, unless you have some special connection to it. Just search google or baidu with the term and if X is a surname you'd usually get hits and usually they'll mention if it is common or rare, sometimes give examples of people with that surname. e.g. https://www.google.com/search?q=暴姓 https://baike.baidu.com/item/尖姓

One of my Chinese teachers suggested 司徒 for me (because it's close to my native family name), I know it's not a super rare name but do you think people would find it strange for a foreigner to adopt one of the few 2-character family names?
