It encourages one to persevere in the face of adversity. It is usually used in association with the little, round paper-mache statues of the monk, Daruma. When you buy the statue, it has no eyes. You paint one in with a writing brush and make a wish for success in a difficult endeavor you are about to embark on (like a school or college entrance exam).
