New Members jpelura3 Posted September 1, 2018 at 09:54 PM New Members Report Posted September 1, 2018 at 09:54 PM First time poster, I was given a Tea or Chocolate set which has characters on the box and different characters on the items themselves. I've tried to use google image and various translation sites in addition to trying the draw the characters myself over the last few years to no avail. My questions are: 1. What language are the characters? I'm not sure if they hanzi or kanji but from what I've read, the characters can be written the same but mean something different. 2. What do the characters represent? 3. What do the characters mean? I've added images of the outer box (blue) the bottom of a dish and the front of the dish. Thanks for any help. I've been curious about where these have come from and what the characters mean. I'll spend an hour trying to figure it out, then get frustrated and put them away for a while. John Quote
Lu Posted September 2, 2018 at 06:05 PM Report Posted September 2, 2018 at 06:05 PM @jpelura3, it seems something has gone wrong in attaching the images. Could you try again? Hopefully we can help deciphering them! Quote

Jim Posted September 11, 2018 at 04:44 AM Report Posted September 11, 2018 at 04:44 AM The three gold characters read 伊万里 which is a style of Japanese pottery but also reproduced in China, apparently. The two on the base are I think 爱陶 which seems to be the name of a contemporary Beijing maker. ETA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imari_ware The characters being simplified would fit with it being a modern mainland piece. 1 Quote

None of the characters in the pictures are simplified though. 伊万里 and 愛陶 are both Japanese 1 Quote
