thechamp Posted September 11, 2018 at 08:03 AM Report Posted September 11, 2018 at 08:03 AM Hi, I got a job as a researcher at a UK university working within the renewable energy group. Our group has quite strong ties to China (a colleague is at a conference there now, actually) and I was wondering if anyone knows the best/biggest conferences related to renewable energy to go to? Also, I would like to improve my vocabulary in this area. Are there any publications that focus on these industries? I would prefer a sort of popular science standard, rather than academic journals (which might be a bit much for me - I did my HSK 5 four years ago!) Quote
li3wei1 Posted September 11, 2018 at 01:56 PM Report Posted September 11, 2018 at 01:56 PM Don't assume academic writing is harder to read. I often find it easier, in fact. There is less slang, cultural references, chengyu, and ambiguity, more repetition, both at vocab and phrase level, and often the writers have read so much in English that their writing seems to be influenced by English grammar (just a feeling I get). If you're working in an academic environment, the vocabulary you want to build is the academic vocabulary, yes? 1 2 Quote

Sounds like a question for the renewable energy forums (if not your research group), rather than the Chinese forums? Would be interesting to hear your results though. Which renewables are you working with in particular? Quote
roddy Posted September 13, 2018 at 10:09 AM Report Posted September 13, 2018 at 10:09 AM Maybe try the renewable energy sections of the big power sites. Eg. 1 Quote

I am not an expert in this field of research, but generally speaking most big conferences are in English. You can try to find a decent event/publication/popular science publication in Chinese, but even in China most people are getting their papers published in English. WeChat Official Accounts seem ok if you are looking for anything in Chinese. If you are having friends visiting Chinese institutions, you can add Chinese researchers and see what links they share, then follow that account. At least this is what I have been doing, I am already comfortable using terms like 指出、提出、即. 1 Quote
thechamp Posted September 14, 2018 at 09:27 AM Author Report Posted September 14, 2018 at 09:27 AM mungouk our group works mostly with marine renewables - wave, tide and offshore wind - but there are also solar energy people here as well as biofuels etc. We actually have a researcher on exchange from Chongqing university who specialises in solar. I work on statistical computing modelling offshore structures. Thanks Roddy, that's perfect. I only really want to get good enough to be able to attend a conference and chat to the academics there. I talk to the Chinese researcher in my office from time to time, but he mostly just asks me if I want to play basketball with him. 1 Quote

China Dialogue 与世,环境危机大家谈 china and the world discuss the environment https://www.chinadialogue.net/ It's not strictly about renewable energy but it includes articles that are relevant and obviously a lot of directly and indirectly related vocabulary. The beauty of it, apart from interesting articles, is that it is bilingual. 1 Quote
艾墨本 Posted October 4, 2018 at 11:42 PM Report Posted October 4, 2018 at 11:42 PM There was a conference at East China Normal University recently between French and China gov on policy dealing with pollution. Perhaps you can look for conferences like that that indirectly but inevitably deal with renewable energy. Quote
