as1991 Posted September 17, 2018 at 07:12 PM Report Posted September 17, 2018 at 07:12 PM Hello all :) first of all, sorry, I'm not a native speaker. Sorry for all the spelling and grammar issues :( I would like to suprise a chinese friend at the airport by holding a sign with her traditional chinese name. Her "english" name is Mingjie. As far as I know, this name has been translated in a somehow phonetic correct way?? Is there an accurate representation of "Mingjie" in chinese/Mandarin? Thanks you sooo much for your help. I really appreciate! Andreas Quote

Yes, but the problem is that there are many options for the correct name. As you know, Chinese names are written in characters. Often, several characters have the same pronunciation, and this is also the case for the characters for 'Mingjie'. Could be 明杰 or 鸣解 or many other options. So I'm afraid you won't get the right answer here. Your options are: - Hold up a sign saying 'Welcome back Mingjie' in English. Assuming she is looking forward to seeing you, she'll be delighted by your presence at the airport and even more delighted by the sign, English or Chinese. Having it in Chinese is a nice touch, but it's a great welcome even in English. - Find out the characters from a reliable source. If she's ever written them down somewhere, you can look there. Or ask her sister/parents/Chinese friend, if you know those. 3 1 1 Quote

Actually I found her name! Her name is part of a photo that shows a slide of a presentation I attached the photo. Now, I have a new problem Is it possible to extract her firstname? I'm sorry, I feel totally dumb. Again, many thanks! Quote

In Chinese names, the family name (surname) comes first, and then the given name. So in Chinese, she writes Jiang Mingjie. Many Chinese swap the order when they live abroad, so in English she writes Mingjie Jiang. Good luck with the sign! 5 3 Quote
