dank voor je reactie, maar dat kan het niet zijn. een amah zorgt goed voor haar mevrouw, die depressief en ziekelijk is.  ze doet kruiden in haar bad opdat mevrouw zich 'largee'  gaat voelen.

laji voelt ze zich al . : -)

Then it's not necessarily Mandarin. How about giving a bit of context? where does it happen? what is the background/ethnicity of the characters? Do they speak Cantonese, Mandarin, what?

the year is 1938. the city Shanghai. ethnic background of the amah not clear. shanghainese probably. 

i could ask my author where she got this word from.

she's australian.
