Getting Chinese Visas in the UK

I'm going to get my visa on friday, only days before I fly out to start teaching in China. If there are any delays, it will be a big problem!! I was wondering if those who have done it can tell me if it is really necessary to turn up very first thing in the morning, and how long it takes to get a visa? I'm travelling from the UK.
