BearXiong Posted January 2, 2020 at 04:16 PM Report Share Posted January 2, 2020 at 04:16 PM Unfortunately last year (2019) I didn't achieve any of my goals. That said, I did finish my PhD, move countries and start a new job. I guess Chinese just doesn't have that high of a priority in my life right now. 1) Learn 3 characters/day. That would get me to over 4000 characters by the end of the year, which I think'll help a lot with reading. I started off learning 3 new characters per day but stopped after learning about 200 characters since I figured that I needed to consolidate the characters I already "knew" more than learn new characters. 2) Read for a minimum of 10 minutes daily. I didn't do this consistently, depending on how you count reading. I did read 3 novels and spent quite a bit of time chatting in Chinese. 3) Learn 3 words/day via Anki. I'm moving away from Anki for learning new words, but I still do add words I want to learn. Not 3 per day though. I still do my Anki reviews daily. 4) Get better at speaking. Speaking clearly lags behind the other skills for me, and probably always will. I don't have any concrete plans here. Didn't achieve this. Spoke less than the year before.

Congratulations on finishing your Ph.D. and starting a new job within a single calendar year.

May I ask: 1) did you neglect pronunciation before that in your Mandarin learning vs did you unintentionally learn it incorrectly? 2) did you do any shadowing / chorusing in the past? 3) what makes you regress? Are you falling back into the same speech patterns you had before?
