As an adverb 不过 means not more than or merely.

If I wanted to say "He's only studied for a year & a half", would I say:

a) 他不过学了一年半而已。

OR

B) 他学了不过一年半而已。

I think the second one is a little better than the first one to express the exact meaning.

B) 他学了不过一年半而已。<----The second one emphasize the time "一年半"(such a short time).
