He returns to Beijing to live with his friend 王凯旋 (aka. 胖子). He learns that 胖子 has recently been cheated by a local antique dealer (大金牙) so they go together to interrupt 大金牙’s business meeting and get back 胖子’s jade amulet that 大金牙 had given him far too little money for. They return home after giving 大金牙 back the money he had initially paid for the amulet. Unfortunately for them, 王凯旋 had previously told 大金牙 where they live, and he arrives the next morning with a group of thugs. 胡八一 offers 大金牙 the money that he has in his backpack (to try and placate 大金牙 and his thugs) but at the same time reveals a mysterious compass that 大金牙 takes an interest in. After seeing the compass, he agrees to take 胡八一’s money but insists that they have lunch with him. During the lunch we learn that 胡八一 has some mysterious tomb finding knowledge and 大金牙 tries to recruit him as a supplier. He says isn’t interested in robbing tombs and they return to 王凯旋’s house after 大金牙 says he will be happy to sell whatever they can get for them if they are interested. At home 王凯旋 suggests that they go back to the village where almost everyone has antiques lying around from the nearby tombs, that way they everyone can benefit and nobody has to do anything bad, since all those valuable antiques are just lying around anyway. 胡八一 agrees and they spend all their money buying gifts for their friends and relatives back in the village. The episode ends with 胡八一 王凯旋 and getting on the train back home. After finding out that there is no electricity to power the TV they had bought as a gift they are hit with more bad news: an earthquake (地震) had revealed a tomb hidden in the nearby mountain, causing the government to send an archaeological team who also acquired all the antiques in the local homes (the same ones that 胡八一 and 王凯旋 were hoping to take back to Beijing to sell). The next morning, they decide to go looking for an old Japanese fortification in the area that 胡八一 has heard of. They head out and after a while are approached by a young girl name 英子. She has been sent by one of the elders in the village (whose relation to 胡八一 I’m not quite sure. Grandfather?). They are slightly unhappy about being led by a girl but follow her once she informs them that they were already going in the wrong direction. After being bossed around by 英子 for a while and some antics involving 王凯旋 and a wild boar, they discover the bones of a Japanese soldier (from the Second World War) and some grave robbers. This leads them to the discovery of a tomb, the roof of which has been booby trapped against grave robbers like themselves. Luckily 胡八一’s knowledge saves them from trying to get in and being engulf in flames. They are interrupted by a scream from 英子 who, as the episode ends, we find out has fallen into what is probably the tomb they were trying to get into, and twisted her ankle. They find mostly junk but the coffin is missing. After looking around they find a mechanism(机关) that reveals the coffin(棺材) (and trips a booby trap which they avoid). Taking funerary objects from the coffin they rouse the corpse inside who then tries to kill them. After a protracted fight with the mummy they escape through hole in the wall and a set of heavy iron doors which they close behind them, sealing off the mummy. They discover that they have found their way into the old Japanese fort, find a generator and turn on the lights。 英子 sees flashes of what are probably ghosts but don’t see them again. The three look for the ammunition room where they find an impressive array of weapons and the episode ends with 王胖子 pulling a machine gun out of a crate. They then get attacked by a swarm of (vampire?) bats which they fight off with bullets and hand grenades. They continue to look for a way out and find a room full of the remains of what the Japanese looted from the tomb. They are disappointed to find nothing of value but they do find the perfectly preserved corpses of children inside the largest coffin. 胡八一 explains that this was done by injecting mercury into them while they were still alive. 王胖子 is deeply affected by this (showing what a good guys he is despite all his clumsiness , reckless behaviour and apparent greed). They vow to bury the children and lay them to rest properly, strap the mercury filled corpses to their backs, and continue looking for a way out. Finding the main entrance has been collapsed the decide the only way out is back and passed the enormous mummy (Yao Ming in costume?) that was still bashing on the big iron doors. Getting back to the entrance to the tomb they found the bashing has stopped because the mummy has broken through. A chase and fight scene ensues. They finally get the exit cleared (previously blocked by the lid of a huge casket) with a grenade but 胡八一 had been distracting the mummy and just as 英子 and 王胖子 are escaping, he slips and falls into the clutches of the monster and the episode ends. As things are looking hopeless, 胡八一 shoots at the booby-trapped roof which causes fire to rain down on them, killing the mummy and giving them time to escape but ruining the tomb at the same time. Burying the mercury children, they find jade amulets in their pockets that shouldn’t have been there (a thank you from the ghosts of the children in return for burying them). Luckily this means they didn’t leave empty handed and return to Beijing to see 大金牙. He gives them a cool 40k for the amulets (are they amulets?) and tells them of an archaeological dig in Xinjiang being planned and financed by an American born Chinese woman whose father went missing on a similar dig and whom she now hopes to find. They head over to an address at 大金牙’s recommendation where 胡八一 gets to show off his knowledge in quite the monologue. Everyone seems both pleased and surprised by his knowledge and he even seen to attract the attention of the trip’s organiser and benefactor who, until now, we have only seen glimpses of from the side or back. Some new characters are introduced and they leave for Xinjiang. Sherley and 陈教授 change their plans and decide they should go to Kunlun glacier in Xingjian first. 胡八一 refuses because he was stationed there while in the army and terrible things happened. He tells the story of a mysterious glowing blue insect that attacked his team and killed his comrades. 陈久仁 and Sherley overhear his story and it turns out they know about the insect too, through stories legends. This all persuades 胡八一 to go along with them, to help him get over his terrible memories. They arrive at the glacier and stop at a place where 胡八一 finds some items that belonged to his comrades that died there. Sherley seems to be on her own mission which worries 胡八一 and 王胖子. Finally, they reach a large cavern with a burial pagoda(?) in it. The pagoda is covered in fire beetles and the area is littered with corpses (both ancient and modern) but Sherly insists on going in (by herself). 胡八一 and 王胖子 follow and while they are in the pagoda, a careless step and fall by one of the interns at the cave entrance almost rouses the beetles (but luckily doesn’t). While semi-secretly robbing the corpses around the pagoda, 王胖子 finds a leather satchel. Sherley sees this and demands he give it to her, which he refuses to do. Unfortunately, one of the interns left the flash on a camera which goes off when he takes a photo. The fire beetles are disturbed by this. The group runs back to cave entrance and quite a long series of events ensues, including Sherley mysteriously not being killed by the fire beetles when they catch up to her. The team leaves the caves and heads for the desert where they hope to find the ancient city talked about in the diary. They arrived at a town and decide they need a guide. They hear about a mysterious old man (安力满) who, according to the towns people, is the best desert guide around. Normally he is impossible to find but luckily (or unluckily) he is currently in police custody because he recently went into the desert as a guide with a group of foreigners and came back alone. Refusing to answer any questions about it, the police arrested him. The episode ends with the team walking into a room serving as 安力满’s cell. agewisdom Posted January 11, 2019 at 01:32 PM Report Posted January 11, 2019 at 01:32 PM Wow, kinda interesting. Thanks for sharing. Looks like quite a lot of work involved. Would it be easier to work with older Chinese TV series that already have english subtitles and translations? Especially the more popular and interesting TV series? I'm thinking Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2010 series would be a good one as well. Quote

There are subtitles in English but they're from Jianghu and hard coded. I recall the quality of the subtitles from Jianghu was great. So, most of the work is done, we just need the Chinese transcript or subtitles. I'm not sure about the availability of Chinese subtitles in SRT format. Perhaps somewhere here can upload the Chinese subtitles if it's available. It would be fun to participate in creating the transcript. Previous discussion here: https://www.chinese-forums.com/forums/topic/55971-three-kingdoms-tv-movies/?tab=comments#comment-431780 Maybe we can create another thread specifically for the Three Kingdoms 2010 project if enough people are interested. markhavemann Posted January 12, 2019 at 03:24 AM Author Report Posted January 12, 2019 at 03:24 AM I would also like to see Romance of the Three Kingdoms done. Looks like there are transcripts available which I'll be adding to the project once I've gone through them a little to verify. I'll see what I can do to get a thread going for the Three Kingdoms soon. When I do I'll post it on the main Transcription Project thread: https://www.chinese-forums.com/forums/topic/57644-transcription-project/ Quote

I've also included a link to a tool that I created to help me to get through TV shows and books. It basically has the transcripts below the video, sentences are broken up into words intelligently (and further checked by me to the best of my Chinese ability). Words can be clicked on to look them up in the dictionary (or arrow keys used to navigate the cursor to them). You probably need the latest Chrome or Firefox to be able to view it properly. Hopefully someone else will find it as useful as I do. Let me know if you encounter any errors or have any feedback. There is a link above but I will include one again here. 1 Quote

(of course, if anybody would like to contribute it is like 20rmb/3USD an episode). In the mean time I will be starting another series soon and run the two concurrently. 1 Quote
