CaliGirl Posted January 24, 2019 at 02:00 PM Report Posted January 24, 2019 at 02:00 PM What is the easiest way to transfer a one time large amount from the US to Shanghai? I heard that it can take months to recover the funds. Is this correct? Is it better to use a personal check written to yourself, a bank certified check or a money wire for amounts over $10,000? Are there banks that are better than others? Quote

CaliGirl Posted January 24, 2019 at 10:47 PM Author Report Posted January 24, 2019 at 10:47 PM Yes, I was thinking students account for travel expenses, housing and tuition fees. But it seems like a hassle. Perhaps a wire is easier? Quote
889 Posted January 25, 2019 at 12:56 AM Report Posted January 25, 2019 at 12:56 AM I'm not sure what a student's account is. The question is, does the recipient actually have an account at a Chinese bank in Shanghai. If you're a parent just trying to send monthly living expenses to a child studying in China, then giving them an ATM card from a US bank is handiest. As to wiring, of course you can do that, to a Chinese bank account. But US banks these days can be troublesome and inquisitive about large wire transfers. So best to use a bank that knows you well. Checks can indeed take many weeks to clear. Quote
