Shelley Posted February 3, 2019 at 09:05 PM Report Posted February 3, 2019 at 09:05 PM Hello and welcome to the forum. Yes it does mean Buddha. It means some who attained Buddha status. 佛 is fó and this means Buddha or Buddhism, the addition of 陀 tuó indicates the attaining of Buddha status. I am not an expert in Buddhism and I am sure someone may come along with a better answer. Please don't consider having this as a tattoo. It will come across as if you are declaring yourself to be Buddha and not that you are a Buddhist. Hope this helps. 1 1 Quote

Publius Posted February 3, 2019 at 09:28 PM Report Posted February 3, 2019 at 09:28 PM Yes. Not as transparent though it may be to a modern reader, 佛 (Middle Chinse *biut, Japanese butu/buti) 陀 (Middle Chinese *da, Japanese da) is a fairly accurate transliteration of the Sanskrit word Buddha. 2 1 Quote
