Renew visitng relatives residence permit abroad

I have a residence permit because my wife is Chinese, but this is expiring while I am in the UK. I am a UK citizen. I plan to visit China for 7 weeks this summer and again next summer, together with my children who also have visiting relatives visas that have not yet expired. My wife is living in China. 

 

I see that is now possible to get a 2 year "L" visa from the embassy in the UK. Can I just apply for this, rather than a visiting relatives visa, since I don;t plan to live in China all year round during the next 2 years?
