AstridB Posted May 15, 2019 at 12:28 PM Report Posted May 15, 2019 at 12:28 PM Hi! I need to find myself a Chinese name for a scholarship application. I have tried to do my research, but not being Chinese or having any Chinese friends that could help, I am not sure if the names sound 'proper' or mean what I think they mean - and if they are even girl names, as I have a hard time distinguishing. If anyone could help, I would be very grateful. I already have the surname, 安(ān).
889 Posted May 15, 2019 at 02:03 PM Report Posted May 15, 2019 at 02:03 PM Myself -- and only speaking for myself -- I like the soft 安瑶琳, but 安丽德 is also nice and has the advantage of slightly echoing Astrid. Both 瑶琳 and 丽德 are actually used as girls' names, but whether adding 安 at the start produces some unfortunate homophone, I don't know. So let's see what others say. Quote
Publius Posted May 15, 2019 at 02:42 PM Report Posted May 15, 2019 at 02:42 PM 安思纯 is good. If you don't mind obscure literary reference, 思莼 is also a conceivable name. But beware, 安 is a question word in Classical Chinese (=哪里、怎么、如何), e.g.: 子非魚,安知魚之樂 安得猛士兮守四方 燕雀安知鴻鵠之志 安能摧眉折腰事權貴 So it has the potential to turn the meaning of a name completely on its head. 1 Quote
New Members 小马过河 Posted May 16, 2019 at 02:21 AM New Members Report Posted May 16, 2019 at 02:21 AM This one is best. 安思纯 (sīchún) This sounds great about the meaning and pronunciation. It is a real Chinese name, simple character and easy to remember. 安昱昕 (yùxīn) is also great. Quote

Yeah, that is definitely one of the perks with the latter one. Quote

Obscure literary references are always good. Oh, I had no idea! Could I get you to elaborate a bit more? Quote
